[At approximately 4AM in the morning of the 25th, the journals will suddenly blare with the sound of an alarm, followed quickly by this message:]

Attention, Region Six. This is an emergency. The following occupants are required to report to the teleporters in one hour to act as a reserve force for an unscheduled battle located in Region Eleven, designation Vaskoth.

[A list of names is posted.]

Those who refuse will be forcibly dragged, and we take no responsibility for any injuries obtained should that happen. Anyone not summoned will not be accepted, either as additional forces or as replacements for someone else. Weaponry and equipment not native to this world is incompatible with the nature of your location, and will therefore not be permitted. Suitable replacements may be available to you at your destination. You will rendezvous with Specialist Davis upon arrival, and he will direct you from there.

I repeat, you have one hour. Don't waste your preparation time with pointless questions. Get moving.

Good morning. Wonderful wake-up call today. [He shifts his bag slightly so he can fix his hair a bit.]

[The smile she gives him is wry.] Yes, I suppose that is one way of putting it.

[She glances around at the rest of the gathered draftees, many clutching thermoses of what she presumes to be coffee.] I'm a little surprised to see so many here on time.

Perhaps the promise of being forcibly dragged out helped those who would otherwise be late. [He pinches the bridge of his nose, his tiredness renewed by the walk to the plaza and climb down into the tunnels.] Is this your first draft?

This is only my second. [she doesn't go into more detail than that.]

Of course, we had the luxury of more time to prepare, then. I'm not sure what to think about the sudden nature of this one.

We have had emergencies before, but not with this addition of not bringing along equipment native to our worlds. That is a different challenge.

[thankfully she isn't affected by that instruction.]

It will make things difficult for some people, I'm sure. But we will make do.

[He notes that she is not carrying weapons on her person.] Are you prepared to fight as soon as we get out there?

[She smiles, though there isn't much humor in it.]

Quite prepared. If it comes down to needing weapons, I'm sure I will find something I can use. And yourself, Mr. Silverberg? Will you be all right?

[He makes a slight dismissive motion with one hand.] I will make do assisting away from the front lines. Do not be surprised if we never cross paths on the battlefield.
