Re: voice
Not that I particularly want to take sides or anything, not that we have a choice now for the moment.
But any information at this point is better than none, right?
voice
[That particularly long message about the possible enemies he would take note of for later, and the fragmented details on the location were quite interesting. He hated walking in blind, and he would find a way to put the info to use somehow.]
...what's this about 'dream people' anyway? You talking about some of those shift-whatevers that I've heard about?
Re: voice
Yeah, those. I heard someone mention that they had met them on a mission or something - if they're the same things. He said they 'offered him the planet', which just sounded shady to me and like it's coming with a hidden fee no one wants to pay.
voice
You're talkin' about those 'dream shifters', right? From the way it's sounding, we can't even trust our own judgement out there.
Helluva way to wage a war, if you're askin' me.
Re: voice
It just leaves a really, really sour taste in my mouth. I don't like being a chess piece in someone else's game, my Academy record makes that really clear.
[ He had multiple notes of things along the lines of 'does not respect authority'. ]
And it makes me wonder... if we're being made to fight these battles for them, is it possible they're fighting other battles too? And on what scale?
voice
[Cliff isn't even going to bother mentioning his own
criminalrecord to this guy. Odds were that there was no comparison. A beat of heavy silence passed before Cliff spoke up again.]Tell me who does 'round here.
Hmm. They said 'Region One,' which says that there's multiple territories and probly compounds on this planet. If the operation is really as big as I'm thinking? I'd say that they are, and it sounds pretty big.
Not that they'd tell us. We're the lowest of the low here.
Re: voice
I don't think we even qualify as 'low'. I'm sure there's something lower and that's what we are.
[ There's a pause. ]
I guess... I'm starting to worry that if this is a war, and it's as big as you're thinking and they're dragging us all here from different planets and worlds - hell, even universes - then will it spread to other planets? Other systems? I know that's big thinking at this stage and I'm probably psyching myself out, but...
voice
Don't worry 'bout it. This place is like a black hole. Easy to fall in, hard to climb out. Just keep your focus on what's here. We're not in a position to do anything else, and we've got our own problems.

[He wasn't a soldier himself, but he did participate in a medieval style war just recently. That, and he's been around the block a few times.
These kids sometimes...]
You'll wanna arm yourself. A sword or a phase gun or something. Make sure it won't fail you, and stick close to your people.
I hate to say, but you don't seem like a person who's done this sorta thing on the front lines.
Re: voice
Back home, I'm the Captain of the S.S. Enterprise. I was trained for space battles and I've been in some, but not big ground skirmishes. Not that I'm against getting my hands dirty if I need to. I have some training for it, but mostly it was fleet tactics.
[ He had done more up close and personal stuff. It's hard to forget parachuting down to try and stop a giant drill. Even now, he could still see the inside of Nero's ship clearly in his head, so different from the sleek Star Fleet ships. Hell, he'd never forget seeing Pike strapped to that table... ]
And don't worry, I know how to use a gun. Growing up on a farm helps that, and the Fleet had standard issues. Been getting some hand-to-hand combat lessons here too.
[Better than his bar brawling anyways.]
I'm guessing you're a soldier back home too.
voice
[Sorry. 'Captain' and 'Fleet' have certain connotations in his mind when they're used together, and his view of this guy was immediately colored by them. He'd ignore it for now-- different universe, different rules-- but he'd keep an eye open for later.]
Not a soldier in the least, but I've done a bit of both in my day. Since you're not familiar with this, stick with the gun and hang back. We dunno the enemies, and you'd get torn up if it's bad.
And don't be stupid. If you're a Captain? Stick where your strengths lie.
Re: voice
Despite what Spock and some others think, I am capable of making smart decisions.
But the same goes for you, you know. I'd prefer all of us come out of this.
[ It was a fool's hope, but a hope nonetheless. Because no one went in hoping to see comrades fall, even if you didn't know their names. ]
voice
Unlike you? This is exactly my thing. Been wanting to take one of these guys since I got here. Heh. It'll be fun.
Worry about yourself. I know these rules, and I've got my people.
Still. Thanks.
Re: voice
[ There's a soft laugh in his voice as he says it, because like it would actually happen, but it was a nice thought, a thing to keep you going, a small bit of cheer in situation that, honestly, had him a little bit scared. ]
You're welcome.
