...I'd like to think this is an act of charity. But from the sound of it, it could also be an act of defiance. Or arrogance. Or a sick joke. Or all three.

I doubt it's a joke. Resources are too scarce to waste time and effort on a prank, even for someone twisted.

As for charity...possibly. It could be a study, too, or any of the others you mentioned. I really don't know.
